ABC April 2015 Charity Auction Raises $8000 for
A very successful Charity auctions was held Sunday night April 26, 2015 in the Ambassador Bible Center (ABC)lecture hall at the home office of the United Church of God. People gathered in the UCG board rooms to look at the silent auction items to bid on. The diversity between paintings, jewelry, works of art, toys, novelty items, hand knitted scarves and services gave everyone something to choose from. For those who may have skipped dinner, in the kitchen and dining hall were items to curb the appetite. A "French Fry" bar was set up, with 5 different sauces of melted cheese and various picante spiced sauces. There were snacks of nuts and fruit with Ice cream Sundae bar with toppings, popular with the children. The event was formally kicked off by a presentation with slides by ABC student Michala Lockwood, who had served in the Ukraine at the orphanage chosen to be the recipient of this year’s fundraising event. This set the stage for audience members to actually see the location and some of the children they would be helping. LifeNets has been supporting this orphanage for a number of years. After the presentation, the first set of live acts took to the stage. The theme was a time machine that took Alison Montero and Roger Nettles, Masters of Ceremony for the night back to different eras of time. It started with the a comical dance contest of thee swing era of the 1920's. This followed by a quartet performing an 1890's number of "the Old Mill Stream". To liven things up a 70's exercise class brought laugh to everyone. They then introduced Student Body President Mark-Philip Pebworth, auctioneer for the night, to begin selling the many donated baked goods. Bidding was lively, with some items going for as much as $400. Original creations of decorative cookies, multi nut brittle, cheesecakes, gluten free items, bags of candy and cakes of all shapes and sizes. And of course there was Barbara Antion's famous Baklava that takes the bid record every year. After selling about 1/3 of the items, the show resumed. The show continued with a prehistoric act, a humorous version of the Dating Game, and then to a fictitious boys Band called the Stare - Ables with an original song by Brodi Robinson comically playing off the self- adoration narcissism of bands today. Then a remake of the "I love Lucy" chocolate factory skit and a parody at a restaurant on "texting" each other while sitting side by side at the dinner table. The auction continued with more delicious items being auctioned. One auctions was for kid's only, hopefully with parents agreeing to their bids. After about 30 minutes of auction the show resumed with skits of the "Bad old Days" by some "Mafia" Immigrants trying to outdo each other through exaggerations of how bad it was in the rough times of the Depression. Final items were auctioned off, and a video of "what class members do to survive" featured each individual in the class in a comical way. The finally was a patriotic song of America the Beautiful led by choir director Ken Shoemaker. The winners of the silent auction were announced and a very successful evening, raising about $8,000 for the orphanage was concluded.
